Computer FAQ’s
I purchased the router package from C&R, why isn’t my computer able to get online?
The most common reason is the settings in your computer. The sequences of connections are as follows; (1) DSL or CABLE service enters the house and terminates at the MODEM. (2) The modem ETHERNET PORT is connected to the ROUTER WAN PORT. (3) The ROUTER is connected to the CAT5E JACK in the room(s) you choose. (4) Your COMPUTER ETHERNET JACK is plugged into the CAT5E JACK in the room.
Computers default to a setting that looks for the MODEM directly. When a ROUTER is added, the computer needs to be redirected to look for the ROUTER instead of the MODEM.
The Router may also need the setting adjusted. Routers normally have a default setting to work with a CABLE MODEM. If you have a DSL MODEM, the ROUTER will need to be setup with the appropriate logon name and password. If you did not have a ROUTER, you would normally store the logon name and password in your computer using a INTERNET SETUP MENU. With a ROUTER, the logon information is stored in the ROUTER and your computer does not need it.
Follow the Setup instructions that accompany the ROUTER to make the proper adjustments. Our Users Manual page has the ROUTER Users Manual for your convenience.
Why isn’t my computer able to access the Router?
First, check the Network Interface card on your computer. If you look at the back of your computer where the Network Patch cable attaches, you will see three small colored lights. If they are not lit up, your computer is not making a connection with the Router. The first thing to check is the Network Patch Cable from your computer to the wall jack. Is it plugged in firmly? Is it plugged into the Blue Cat5E Jack on the wall (your home might have a white jack labeled “Data”)?
Next, go to the closet where the Router is located. Open the panel and check if the Blue Cat5E wire is plugged into the Router. There may be several Blue Cat5E wires, each one is labeled, find the label of the room you are working on and make sure it is plugged into the router. The Router also has three small lights for every room connection it can make. Each computer that is plugged in and turned on should light up at least two of the lights.
If all connections are accurate and you have lights working, open you Web Browse (Internet Explorer, etc,) and type in the address located in your Router Users Manual. The 8-port router has this address on the face of the router.
Will C&R Systems program my computer for me?
C&R Systems does not specialize in computers. There are many different operating systems, hardware and software variations and other factors that an experienced, trained computer technician will be able to accommodate. We recommend the use of a professional computer technician to set up your home network.
How do I network all of the computers in my home?
The quick answer is you need a network card in each computer, a router, and each computer must be programmed to be a part of a network. If you utilize Windows XP, it has a built-in Network Wizard that can assist you.
Why would I network the computers in my house?
By creating a home network you can share files, printers, scanners, CD-R burners, DVD burners, music, pictures and Internet access.
